The Internet of Things

Analysys Mason and Epsilon Events held a one-and-a-half day interactive conference exploring the 'Internet of Things' in Brussels on 7–8 May 2009.

Running alongside the 'Second Transatlantic Symposium on the Societal Benefits of RFID', organised by the European Commission, this informative conference addressed the fundamental issues relating to the Internet of Things, and discussed the developments that will benefit European society.

Panellists and speakers at the conference shared their insights into this developing phenomenon, and addressed the following key questions:

  • What can be learnt from experience with radio frequency identification (RFID) technology?
  • What new business opportunities arise for vendors, application developers and network operators?
  • How can public policy be used to encourage research and innovation?
  • What novel service and communication architecture may be required to support the Internet of Things?
  • What new regulatory and consumer and civil rights issues are posed by such smart, connected devices?

This conference provided an open platform for discussions with relevant stakeholders: standardisation bodies, consumer organisations, national and European authorities, and industry.
