Mobile TV services: Blurred vision

Total Telecom's Joanne Taaffe looks at how operators are starting to give away TV services in the face of slow uptake from consumers. But will they live to regret it?

Joanne notes that the Olympic Games and the Euro 2008 football championships have given mobile operators a prime opportunity to discover if customers are willing to pay for TV content delivered over newly installed DVB-H networks. But new business models suggest they are still at odds over how best to lure customers more than two years after the first broadcast services were launched.

Amit Nagpal, partner, strategy consulting, at Analysys Mason says that there is no guarantee that operators will be able to charge for mobile TV services even with better handsets and full coverage. “It is very uncertain as to whether [mobile TV] will take off.
