"5G use cases often lack an end-to-end business case, but using fixed–wireless access may be a viable way to facilitate short-term 5G deployment for mobile-only operators that wish to gain traction in the fixed market."

At Huawei’s 9th annual Global Mobile Broadband (MBB) Forum, David Dyson, CEO of Hutchison 3G UK (3UK), announced his plans to use 5G to reshape the fixed broadband market in the UK. This follows on from the fixed–wireless access (FWA) trials that 3UK completed with Huawei in November 2018. Other industry stakeholders at the event noted that enhanced-MBB (eMBB) was the most-likely use case for the first phase of 5G deployments. This comment notes the challenges and opportunities that eMBB and FWA use cases deliver to MNOs, and discusses 3UK’s plans for harnessing 5G MBB to gain traction in the fixed broadband market.
