Worldwide mobile broadband connections to hit 445 million by 2015

Mobile broadband represents a major growth opportunity for mobile network operators worldwide. The number of mobile broadband connections will grow from 70 million at the end of 2009 to 445 million in 2015, increasing from 2% of all mobile connections to 6%. Developed mobile markets in Europe, North America and parts of the Asia–Pacific region have stagnated and there are few other growth segments available to operators. In developing markets, mobile frequently represents the only opportunity for subscribers to get access to broadband, due to the lack of fixed-line infrastructure. As a result of the growth in mobile broadband, the total amount of traffic carried over wireless networks is set to increase tenfold to 19 exabytes (EB) in 2015. Revenue from mobile broadband will grow much more slowly, trebling from USD18.5 billion in 2009 to USD64 billion in 2015.
