Increasingly, the question for mobile operators is not whether to offer mobile TV services, but when and how. The choice of a broadcasting solution for mobile TV is thus a crucial decision for operators – but they must choose carefully. Although DVB-H is the broadcasting solution currently favoured by the majority of operators, it has a number of drawbacks, in particular the costs of acquiring the necessary spectrum and of deploying the network. Alcatel has recently unveiled its own broadcasting solution, S-band DVB-H, which aims to reduce DVB-H deployment costs. This paper examines the potential benefits and drawbacks of S-band DVB-H for mobile operators.
