UMTS900: European UMTS operators are driving the in-band migration of W-CDMA to 900MHz but are constrained by regulation

Technological developments have led to the appearance of new, cost-efficient ways of deploying 3G networks, including the use of 900MHz and 1800MHz GSM frequency bands for 3G services. In the majority of telecoms markets, mobile operators are driving the in-band migration of UMTS services to the 900MHz frequency but they are constrained by the regulators, whose position regarding this issue is still unclear.
