Market sizing and forecasting

Challenge

Generating impartial and realistic forecasts is notoriously difficult, as the data, skills and market understanding required to do the job properly are rarely found together.

How can Analysys Mason help?

Our technical expertise in estimation and forecasting is supplemented by a comprehensive knowledge of the telecoms and IT industries and a large base of existing data collected over many years and refreshed through continuous research. We are independent and our estimates and forecasts are impartial and trusted in the industry.

Case study: For an international telecoms equipment manufacturer seeking to gain insights into global trends in demand for GSM technology, we are currently undertaking a major long-term forecasting project. The market for GSM is mature and cyclical and cannot be accurately forecast using static tools. We are building a simulation forecast model using the System Dynamics method, which is able to model the intricacies of a market strongly affected by complex relationships between factors such as supply chain, manufacturing capacity and pricing.

Case study: To assist a European incumbent operator with strategic planning, we forecast the market in four Scandinavian countries for consumer spend and operator revenue for a range of specific residential telecoms services in voice and video telephony, Internet access, Web browsing, messaging, information services, and personalisation and other content services. The client used the forecasts as input into its strategic and tactical market planning.

Case study: For a major European telecoms incumbent, we provided volume analysis to accompany a previously produced revenue forecast covering UK residential, SME and corporate direct and indirect spend on fixed voice, mobile, WAN and broadband services. The work provided the client with a more detailed understanding of the volume assumptions underlying the revenue forecasts and of the dynamics of the SME market.

Case study: The engineering services division of a major European incumbent operator sought to understand how telecoms equipment is distributed in its home market. We estimated the size of the market for five distinct types of distribution and logistics services and ran a workshop to help our client develop a proposition to take to market.
