Analysys Mason assessed the enterprise requirements of high-speed Internet services for a regional development agency
Business Challenge
- Our client – a UK regional development agency – required market research into the high-speed Internet requirements of businesses located in part of the region, in order to inform a potential infrastructure-based intervention.
- Analysys Mason was commissioned to assess the level of demand and the benefits to local businesses of the proposed intervention.
Approach
- Designed the research programme and managed a programme of short telephone interviews with 250 businesses in the region.
- Undertook 30 face-to-face interviews with key businesses from the region’s commercial and industrial parks.
- Identified and analysed: current penetration of broadband and other high-speed connection, suppliers, spending issues, and the relative importance to businesses of communications (compared with other important business issue.
- Quantified the productivity benefits and revenue gains that would result from investment in new regional infrastructure.
- Identified areas with the highest demand density and greatest propensity for business investment.

Benefits and results
- Results were analysed and presented to the client ahead of the final preparation of its investment case.
- Our research work is helping our client with its internal approvals process, procurement design and evaluation methodology, and future monitoring of the infrastructure project following launch.
