"Port authorities can benefit from mobile network operators’ business knowledge in order to deliver 5G solutions and increase operational efficiency."

A large amount of the world's trade flows through sea ports, and port authorities (PAs) must ensure that operations are smooth and efficient because they move millions of containers on and off cargo freights every year. Mobile network operators (MNOs), together with their vendor partners (such as Huawei), have an opportunity to engage with PAs and develop 5G and multi-access edge computing (MEC) propositions to not only automate ports’ operations and reduce costs, but also to augment their own revenue.

This case study provides:

  • an overview of the challenges faced by port authorities
  • an analysis of the opportunities presented to PAs through partnerships with mobile network operators and their vendor partners, such as Huawei
  • implementation details of a 5G solution together with MEC and network slicing for ports
  • an overview of MNOs' opportunities as they develop new partnerships with PAs and benefit from their learnings.
