"Next-generation PON deployments are being driven by mobile transport needs, capex avoidance and competition in the consumer market, and VR take-up may drive such roll-outs in the longer term."

Operators worldwide are beginning to deploy next-generation passive optical network (PON) technology and announce timelines for such roll-outs. For example, Telefónica has recently stated that it will start deploying multi-technology optical line terminals (OLTs) (GPON, XGS-PON and potentially 25G and 50G PON) across large parts of its network in 2020 and will start commercialising XGS-PON in 2020. However, many other fibre operators have yet to roll out next-generation PON networks and are seeking to understand the rationale behind early deployments. This comment examines the current and future drivers of next-generation PON roll-outs.
