"Slow take-up of 5G services by consumers in the Gulf region may push operators to focus on business use cases."

Gulf-based telecoms operators were among the first in the world to introduce 5G and had reported 10 network launches by November 2019. However, we expect the consumer adoption of 5G to be slow and confined to a niche high-value segment. Operators in the region are experimenting with new offerings for businesses based on enhanced fixed-wireless access (FWA). They are also assessing the role of 5G in more-radical use cases such as private networks and IoT to potentially generate new revenue streams.

This article discusses the recent announcements of 5G network launches in the region and argues that operators should focus on the basic applications that share connectivity requirements with 4G because they hold the strongest potential for 5G in the short term.
