Spectrum Newsletter – October 2019

Roberto Kompany Senior Analyst, Research

This edition of the Spectrum Newsletter for up to October 2019 highlights the spectrum auction activity worldwide in four regions:

  • the Americas (Latin America (LATAM) and North America (NA))
  • Asia–Pacific (emerging Asia–Pacific (EMAP) and developed Asia–Pacific (DVAP))
  • Europe (Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and Western Europe (WE))
  • the Middle East and Africa (MEA).

Notable events in the period include the following.

  • Argentina. Argentina’s modernisation secretary announced at a conference in July that the country will hold two sets of multi-band spectrum auctions within 60 days. These auctions will include spectrum within the 700MHz and the AWS (1.7–2.1GHz) bands together with the 1895–1905MHz, 1890–1900MHz and 1880–1890MHz bands for the northern region, Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area and the southern regions, respectively. The government aims to obtain USD500 million from the auctions.
  • Hong Kong. The regulator announced two dates for the 5G C-band spectrum auctions. The first auction for 200MHz of spectrum in the 3.5GHz band is set for 14 October 2019, and a second auction for 100MHz of spectrum in the 3.3GHz band and 80MHz in the 4.9GHz band is expected to follow immediately after. The per-megahertz reserve prices for the 3.3GHz, 3.5GHz and 4.9GHz bands are set at USD255 000, USD510 000 and USD383 000, respectively.
  • Poland. In September, Poland’s government announced that the 5G spectrum auction for the release of spectrum in 3.5GHz band will take place in December 2019 or January 2020. Four blocks of 80MHz in the 3.4–3.8GHz band will be offered, but only two of the blocks will be available nationwide. The other two will have coverage limitations because the bands are currently in use by government or private users.
