The problem

A global telecoms solution vendor wanted to learn about operators' strategies for mobile video. The key objective of the study was to gain insight into how operators are dealing with increased traffic from mobile video to enable our client to position its mobile video offering more effectively.

The solution

Analysys Mason conducted a series of interviews with fixed and mobile operators to understand aspects of video services, video content and video traffic as below.

Video services

  • To learn about what mobile video services have been deployed by operators.
  • To understand the business drivers for providing mobile video services.
  • To learn about operators' plans in terms of new mobile video services and changes to the infrastructure.

Video content

  • To identify the different approaches operators had adopted to sourcing content for mobile video services and how they generate revenue from them.
  • To understand how operators are responding to over-the-top (OTT) video content.

Video traffic

  • To identify the impact that the introduction of mobile video services has had on operators.
  • To learn about the different approaches operators have adopted to manage the increase in traffic driven by mobile video services.

The result

Our report provided the clients insight into the mobile video market. We offered a number of recommendations and suggested next steps to the client in terms of the type of operators that they should target primarily, and the solutions that are more suitable to satisfy operators' requirements.
