The problem

  • In a context of increased competition, our client, a group of fixed and mobile operators (opcos), wish to deliver solutions that combine the best attributes of over-the-top (OTT) and traditional telco approaches. To achieve this ambition, the operators need to move towards a ‘software telco’ operating model by adopting network function virtualisation (NFV) and software-defined networks (SDN)
  • Analysys Mason was engaged to develop an NFV and SDN strategy for the opcos

The solution

  • The project comprised three phases:
    • Phase 1: Ambition and readiness. This report set the requirements for NFV/SDN in line with our client’s vision, assessed the opcos’ current situation and identified any gaps that need to be closed to enable implementation
    • Phase 2: Design/blueprint. This report set out the concepts and conditions that should guide the design and implementation of an NFV/SDN  architecture
    • Phase 3: Business analysis. We developed generic virtual evolved packet core (vEPC) and virtual IP multimedia subsystem (vIMS) business cases to identify virtualisation benefits, evaluated six relevant vendors, provided insight into the technology in which the virtualisation strategy is imbedded, and developed a roadmap for our client’s virtualisation, taking into account the different priorities of its opcos

The result

The project spanned operators in the Middle East, the Indian Ocean and Europe and brought together the strategic capabilities of Analysys Mason’s consulting division and the in-depth knowledge of our research division. Our client received a report covering all three phases of work
