VMware’s general release of Edge Cloud Orchestrator is a significant development that marks a new direction for the evolution of edge-native software. In the first wave of edge-native software, much of the development centred around applications that move from edge location to edge location to support mobile people and things, such as drones and cars. But so far, most edge applications that have emerged are tethered to a single edge location such as a branch office, manufacturing site or quick-service restaurant. These applications require the on-premises management of on-premises edge clouds, stateless devices and IT/OT integration. VMware is addressing that market with Edge Cloud Orchestrator and, because it will invest significant resources pursuing it, we are surely now in a new phase – that of the second generation of edge-native software.
