Early results from One NZ and T-Mobile highlight the promise of satellite direct-to-device services
Satellite-based, direct-to-device (D2D) connectivity offers a fresh way for mobile network operators (MNOs) to differentiate their plans and add value to their premium tiers. Indeed, consumers are intrigued by these services; 72% of mobile users from Analysys Mason’s 2024 consumer survey expressed an interest in satellite SMS and emergency services.
The D2D market is thus a promising opportunity for MNOs at a time when revenue growth is slowing, connection numbers are plateauing and traditional upsell strategies (such as offering data or speed upgrades) are becoming less effective (mobile services revenue worldwide will grow by just 1.1% per year between 2024 and 2029).
