Launch service providers should learn from SpaceX and the activities in 2024 to develop winning strategies
2024 was a record year in terms of the number of satellites launched, particularly for SpaceX. It continued to dominate the launch market and was responsible for more than half of all satellites and rockets launched to orbit, including four test flights of its Starship vehicle.
Market competition also increased; players such as Arianespace, Firefly, India Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and United Launch Alliance (ULA) successfully flew their new vehicles, some for the first time. However, these players are launching slowly, most emerging players continue to be delayed and there is concern over Starship’s ability to disrupt the market and eliminate competition.
Nonetheless, there are winning strategies that launch service providers (LSPs), satellite operators and investors can follow.
