The costs of deploying network infrastructure in rural areas can be prohibitive. The combination of higher roll-out costs and lower population densities than in urban areas means that the return on investment from expanding networks into these areas is often unfavourable. Operators should therefore consider alternative ways in which to expand their coverage into areas that are underserved because traditional methods are not commercially viable.
