Some of the advanced 5G use cases, such as ultra-reliable, low-latency communications (URLLC) and network slicing, rely heavily on slot synchronisation to ensure that there is no overlap between the uplink and downlink transmissions and to minimise interference. Many mobile network operators (MNOs) still depend on satellite clock synchronisation sources, but these are prone to jamming and are not suitable for indoor coverage.

This report provides:

  • an analysis of the challenges that MNOs face in the 5G standalone (SA) era and an explanation of why they must upgrade their transport networks
  • recommendations for MNOs related to upgrading transport networks
  • a discussion of what network synchronisation means in the 5G era.
