Mobile pricing strategies: the next target market for eSIMs will be domestic mobile services
Established, large MNOs worldwide have had little incentives (and interest) in promoting eSIM technology thus far. No-frills carriers, such as MVNOs, and app-centric brands have so far been the main promoters of eSIMs, primarily offering cheap international roaming tariffs, as we have previously discussed.
No MNOs worldwide have been reported to introduce any particular innovative eSIM-based services beyond providing connectivity services on additional devices (such as smartwatches and tablets) or offering a “test drive” of the network (mainly in the USA).
MVNOs are driving the push for innovative eSIM services. They are exploring options beyond international roaming, enabled by eSIM. Honest, an MVNO based in the UK, provides a simple example of the new and innovative services that are enabled by eSIM technology.
MNOs risk missing opportunities if they continue to overlook the potential of eSIM technology or, even worse, risk losing connectivity revenue to MVNOs that promote plans based on eSIMs.
