The need for greater efficiency, flexibility and adaptability has driven network operators to automate their network operations to support the provisioning and delivery of software-defined and service-based network architecture. Intent-based networking (IBN) is a pivotal step towards enhancing the operation of autonomous networks and provisioning and delivering complex 5G services. This article assesses what operators need to do to realise IBN, the progress they are making and the future outlook.
