Rupert Wood

Research Director, expert in communications infrastructure and network business analysis

Capex in traditional telecoms assets is declining, making it important for operators to focus on how and where to redeploy any improved cashflow.

Rupert leads Analysys Mason’s research across a wide range of areas including operator investment and opex, operator business structures, fibre and fixed–mobile convergence, broadband technologies, wireless infrastructure, spectrum, and network traffic forecasting.

He has delivered research and consulting projects for a broad mix of clients, including fixed infrastructure vendors, operators, regulators, industry bodies and financial institutions.

Over more than 25 years, Rupert has authored hundreds of reports on digital communications, spanning topics from detailed regulatory mechanics to the long-term evolution of telecoms business models. His work ranges from data-driven analysis and industry forecasting to broader reflections on how technology and infrastructure shape economic systems.

Throughout his career as an industry analyst, he has quietly compiled 'dictionary of received ideas' for the telecoms industry. Much of his research is driven by a desire to test these assumptions against available evidence and determine which ones hold up to scrutiny.

Previously, Rupert was a college lecturer at the University of Cambridge, from where he holds a PhD. He has a degree in Philosophy and French from UCL.

From his previous job, he retains a preference for a collegiate approach to industry research, and a belief that all answers are provisional.
