Barriers to AI regulation: what operators and vendors should know
AI regulation is developing worldwide, but progress has been uneven. The South Korea Basic AI Act and the EU AI Act are two prominent examples of current legislative efforts to regulate AI use. Both pieces of legislation aim to mitigate risks while facilitating domestic innovation.
However, four structural barriers have slowed the development of AI regulation in other jurisdictions:
- geopolitical unrest and competition
- the public sector’s limited capacity to conduct technical audits
- unresolved questions around liability
- the pace at which AI technology is developing.
Telecoms operators and vendors offering AI solutions must be aware of these barriers, and consider how their gradual removal will bring an increase in regulation.
