The US broadband market is underserved; Verizon’s 5G FWA launch should trigger increased competition

Competition in the high-speed broadband market is important for the development of the economy in the digital age. Surprisingly, however, the USA is one of the least-competitive markets for this service. Verizon's launch of 5G fixed–wireless access (FWA) services should encourage additional competition between fixed broadband providers, particularly in underserved areas. This comment provides an overview of the role of 5G in addressing challenges and opportunities in the US broadband market.
