The Manchester office

Our work

Typical projects

The team in the Manchester office provide expert transaction support on both the buy-side and the sell-side to clients including large financial institutions and some of the biggest operators in the UK and worldwide. Our office includes commercial and technical experts in the TMT industry who work closely with junior staff on due diligence projects. These projects involve market research (for example, assessing current and future competition and reviewing regulation and policy), business plan reviews (evaluating detailed business plans and reviewing costs, revenue and roll-out plans) and technical analysis.

We also work on regulation and policy projects in the UK and worldwide and provide guidance to leading organisations including governments. For example, we have worked with government departments on the development of future policies and programmes to provide wider broadband coverage.

Matt Yardley, Partner

Welcome to the Manchester office!

I went to university in Manchester and obtained a first-class degree in mechanical engineering and a PhD in aerospace engineering. I then went to work for Shell Research as an explosions scientist for 2 years before making the switch to telecoms consulting and joining Analysys Mason in 1997. I worked in the Cambridge office for 12 years but jumped at the opportunity to move back up north to head the office and be closer to my family. I am married with three children and, as a keen cyclist and fell runner, I feel very lucky to live on the edge of the Peak District.

Analysys Mason is a unique company. I never thought that I would stay in telecoms consulting for my whole career, but I am still here after 24 years at the company! The job has taken me all over the world, and I have advised on projects that make a real difference to peoples’ lives. A long-running theme of my work has been promoting broadband connectivity to all parts of society; this is something that is even more pressing than it has ever been, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

I cannot do what I do without the support of an office, and the Manchester office is like no other Analysys Mason office!

I joined Analysys Mason right after finishing an integrated Master's in mathematics from the University of Manchester. This has been my first full-time position – as well as my introduction to telecoms – but the training and guidance provided by Analysys Mason has helped me to grow and find confidence in the role of Associate Consultant. I have had the opportunity to work with colleagues in other offices including London, Stockholm and Dubai.

Helena Fyles Associate Consultant

I joined the Analysys Mason team in Manchester after finishing my biology degree at Imperial and have really enjoyed working in the telecoms industry so far. I have always been quite interested in consulting and did a virtual internship experience during the summer of my penultimate year at university, but I had not had any other actual consulting training or experience prior to starting with Analysys Mason. I have really enjoyed the work that I have done so far, and I feel like the transition has been really smooth. The training sessions taught me a lot of technical knowledge and everyone in my team has been very supportive; they have welcomed all of my questions, no matter how big or small. I only started 2 months ago, but I have already had a go at a wide range of tasks including helping to produce slides for client reports, working on parts of a business plan and conducting GIS mapping via MapInfo and Alteryx!

Holly Yang Associate Consultant

As a Principal and Co-Head of Technology Consulting, I manage projects that are predominantly technology-focused. I get exciting opportunities to work with clients that are shaping telecoms infrastructure around the world, which helps me to keep up-to-date with the latest developments.

Rod Parker Co-Head of Technology

I graduated from Leeds University with a first-class (industrial honours) degree in management; this included working for the Dyson commercial team for a year with colleagues in Europe and the Middle East. I am originally from Bath, but after studying in Leeds, I decided to stay in the north. I am a keen sportsman and runner, and have a particular interest in football and cricket. As well as sport, I enjoy cooking and food, and I often compare notes with my colleague Charlie on the best places to eat in the city.”

Osh Devlin-Cook Consultant

I am a national-level table tennis player and am always on the lookout for local competitions, which happen regularly in Manchester. Workwise, I have been part of some very cool projects ranging from strategy work for start-ups that are planning to launch satellites, to providing advisory support to investors in major deals. I have worked virtually with colleagues from other Analysys Mason offices including Singapore, Oslo, London, Cambridge, New Delhi and Dubai. I have been part of a number of international strategy projects; I was lucky enough to stay next to the pyramids in Egypt, and on one occasion, I travelled to three continents in a week!

Culture and benefits

Culture

Culture

When in the office, there is a good amount of social interaction. The team normally goes to the on-site café to get lunch on a Thursday. During various lockdowns, virtual lunches have been set up to provide opportunities to talk through weekend plans and get to know colleagues. In addition to this, junior staff have regular buddy lunches to get to know their colleagues better and learn trade secrets first-hand. Associate Consultants often go for meals or after-work drinks in MediaCity and Castlefield, and following the pandemic, we hope to increase the number of social events around work.

We tend to dress business casual in the office, with more casual attire on Fridays. The office has a fairly flat hierarchy; junior members work closely with senior staff on projects and workloads are shared across the team. The office operates a hot-desk system, which enables you to sit next to a range of different people in the office. This can be very useful when working on projects together.
