The Singapore office

Analysys Mason’s Singapore office was opened in 2005 to support the burgeoning growth in the TMT sector in the region. Over the past 15 years, we have expanded to a team of over 15 people, with a mix of consulting professionals and support staff. The Singapore office works in conjunction with Analysys Mason’s team in Hong Kong, where we developed a local presence in 2015 to better engage with our clients in the Greater China region.

Some of the key markets that we work in are Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia. Our Singapore office also supports projects across other parts of Asia–Pacific, such as Greater China and Australasia.

The diverse mix of clients and their geographies often results in travel to unique destinations over the course of our project work.

Location

Analysys Mason’s Singapore office is located on Robinson Road, at the heart of Singapore’s central business district (CBD). The convenient location offers easy accessibility and excellent connectivity, and there are multiple major Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) stations within walking distance. There is a wide array of options for winding down after work in the surrounding area, including gyms, bars, restaurants and hawker centres.

Typical projects

We typically work in three of Analysys Mason's five practices: strategy, transaction support and regulation and policy.

We work closely with all types of players in the TMT sector in Asia–Pacific to understand their key strategic issues. We then use our strong industry knowledge and expertise to support them.

Singapore is a global financial hub, so we work closely with both buy-side and sell-side investors regarding TMT assets. For example, we may support a potential investment into a TMT asset by performing a commercial due diligence on the target. We may also conduct market studies on focus areas to inform potential investors on the overall market landscape and provide a view of investment opportunities.

We also work closely with regulators and governments across the region to help them to understand key developments in the TMT space and how they should be managed via regulation or policy. This includes areas that affect the products and services that are available to consumers, such as 5G. We also work with industry players to assess how best to navigate the regulatory landscape while supporting their strategic objectives

One of my most interesting projects with Analysys Mason so far was supporting a digital finance operator’s initial public offering (IPO). The digital finance industry was relatively new to me and I was tasked to assess the size of the different market segments. It was challenging because the market was nascent so there was limited data. However, it was very fulfilling when we delivered
the output successfully. It is always interesting to see the impact of your work and in this case, that meant seeing the company getting listed on the stock exchange!

One of my most interesting projects has been helping a mobile operator to review its spectrum strategy for the next 5 years. We analysed this from multiple angles, including its expected spectrum requirements, its options to acquire spectrum and the appropriate regulatory steps to take. We also developed a spectrum valuation model. This was my first spectrum valuation project and the learning curve was definitely steep. Nevertheless, it offered me a much deeper understanding of a mobile operator's spectrum strategy as well as its various value drivers. It was really fulfilling to know that the outputs of my model would be discussed at board meetings to support decision-making.

Welcome to the Singapore office!

We stand in the middle of a region that presents incredible diversity in terms of business challenges. Singapore is an exciting location to be in because our geographic coverage covers Asia–Pacific, from East Asia down to Australasia. There is an incredible diversity of project work and exposure to different work cultures.

Meet the team

Analysys Mason is a great place to develop a career in management consulting and be at the forefront of new trends in the TMT sector. Since joining the Singapore office as an Associate Consultant in 2010, I have worked with telecoms operators, infrastructure companies, internet companies and regulators in more than 10 markets across Asia–Pacific to deliver high-impact projects to senior management, board members and government officials. During the weekends, I enjoy playing Nintendo Switch with my son and taking my daughter out for a stroll in the park.

I joined Analysys Mason’s Singapore office in 2013 after graduating from the London School of Economics. I always had a keen interest in technology and have enjoyed working on a broad range of stimulating projects across the TMT space, serving a diverse range of clients and geographies. The collaborative culture within the company has also fostered a positive working environment throughout my journey thus far. Outside of work, I enjoy exhausting myself via Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and during the COVID-19-related lockdowns, I took up a new hobby of collecting vinyl records to enjoy at home.

Jay Lee Manager

I joined Analysys Mason’s Hong Kong office in 2018 after spending 2 years as a Management Consulting Analyst at Accenture. What attracted me to Analysys Mason is the company’s expertise and track record in the telecoms sector. This has allowed me to work on some of the forefront topics in the industry including digital infrastructure (such as data centres and fibre) and operator strategies (such as pay-TV operators that are pivoting to OTT). I am originally from Taiwan and have spent a significant amount of time in both Singapore and Hong Kong, but my project work has helped me to gain greater exposure to other markets in the region. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time relaxing in nature; I particularly like long walks and hiking.

Working in the Singapore office

The size of team in Singapore has grown in the past few years, but the underlying culture within the office remains tight-knit. Having lunch breaks together at nearby eateries where we catch-up not only on our ongoing projects but also on our personal lives is a daily occurrence and has helped to build a sense of camaraderie within the office. This has also fostered a strong collaborative culture where all team members are open and approachable, regardless of seniority.
