Reliance Industries announced plans for its new Jio Gigafiber FTTP service at its 2018 AGM. Having disrupted the mobile market, the company now intends to expand into the wireline segment and is planning to extend fibre connectivity to homes, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and large enterprises across 1100 cities, with the potential to cover 50 million premises. This comment assesses the potential of Reliance Jio’s FTTP deployment and the factors that will help and hinder the development of a profitable roll-out.
