"Falling announcement volumes are not a retreat from customer AI; they are the sign of a market moving from launches to operations."

Telecoms operators announced 83 customer engagement AI projects in 2024, 36 in 2025 and 11 in the first half of 2026. On the face of it, operators are losing interest in applying AI to customer interactions – but this is not, in fact, the case. The initial launch-announcement phase, in which every chatbot deployment was publicised, has ended, and what remains is a smaller number of deeper and more operationally embedded programmes. Agentic AI featured in more customer announcements than every other approach combined in the first half of 2026 (Figure 1). The volume of public announcements has fallen, but the ambition has risen.
