Sustainability compliance is fast becoming crucial to market access for data centres
Data centre sustainability regulations are tightening worldwide as policy makers pay closer attention to the sector’s demand for power, water and grid capacity.
Analysys Mason’s Sustainability regulations and frameworks tracker reveals that several major economies, including China, Japan and some EU member states, have introduced new data centre-specific requirements linked to energy consumption, efficiency, water use, renewable electricity and waste heat recovery. Ireland has also adopted measures to manage the impact of data centre electricity consumption on the national grid, particularly as the growth of AI intensifies pressure on energy infrastructure.
Data centre operators seeking to build or expand will need to demonstrate alignment with local energy systems, water availability and climate policy. Sustainability compliance is now a critical factor in market access and investment decisions. Operators that treat this as a strategic growth issue will be better placed to win planning approval, access power and reassure investors.
