Generative AI (GenAI) has revolutionised numerous industries, including the software development sector. By using advanced machine learning (ML) algorithms, GenAI can now generate any type of application code, which will significantly affect the software development landscape.
This article explores the role that GenAI can play in high-quality code creation and its potential benefits and threats to software applications. It also considers whether businesses will continue to purchase application software when code generation becomes freely accessible or whether they will want to generate it using GenAI. Whatever the outcome, the use of GenAI in code generation will erode the potential value of many applications, including OSS and BSS suites. GenAI code generation is also likely to impact bespoke software development, such as process automations tailored to an individual network operator − often performed by system integrators (SIs) and in-house teams.
