Holographic video calling (HVC) has featured in science fiction movies for around 50 years. While 2D video calling has become ubiquitous in consumer and business communications over the past 20 years, holographic calls have yet to become widely available. This could change, however, because HVC technology now exists and research projects are exploring how to make it more accessible to the mass market.
