The problem

  • A major utility company in a developed Asian market engaged Analysys Mason to assess if there was an opportunity for it to monetise its assets to enable telecoms services, particularly in light of the expected deployment of 5G

The solution

  • We provided an overview of the value chains for fixed and mobile telecoms services, including a review of the key physical assets used to enable them
  • We performed a review of the local telecoms market and key developments (e.g. 5G, fibre) and expected deployment plans by individual operators
  • We provided international case studies of how various physical assets, including those owned by utility companies, have been used to enable telecoms deployment
  • Lastly, we performed an assessment of the suitability of the client’s various asset types to meet expected telecoms deployment by operators based on factors such as: geo-location, technical suitability, regulatory constraints
  • We then provided recommendations to the client regarding key opportunities that it could support with its assets, along with a high-level estimate of the revenue opportunity for individual use cases
  • We provided a lobbying paper to the client to support its efforts in securing permission from the government regarding the leasing of its assets to telecoms operators

The result

  • Following our final presentation and report, the client’s senior management used our findings as the basis to identify key prioritisation areas for it to focus on and pursue further

We were appointed by our client to assess if there was an opportunity for it to monetise its assets to enable telecoms services. The client’s senior management used our findings as the basis to identify key prioritisation areas for it to focus on and pursue further
